Giovanni Laganà was born in Reggio Calabria in 1968 and in the Ionian Sea - in Saline in the province of Reggio Calabria - from an early age he lived in symbiosis with the sea and in particular with the underwater world.
Already at the age of 14 he faced the first deep apneas, often unreasonably risky…
The first real wetsuit, after being so cold, was given to him by Evelyn, his lifelong companion, for his nineteenth birthday.
In the following years, however, Giovanni understood that the few minutes of apnea spent consecutively underwater were no longer enough.
And so, in 1998, in Vulcano (Eolian Island) he obtained his first scuba diving certificate.
He has a degree in Engineering but this does not matter, it is another theme, albeit an important one, of his life.
Dragged by his daughters and wife, after several years spent sailing between the islands of the Mediterranean, always with some summer dives, he resumes the path he has already begun and, since 2013, he never manages to stay out of the water for a whole month: constantly, in any season.
He becomes a professional diving instructor and follows his students with meticulousness, infusing, at every step, advice and prudence.
But slowly he realizes that photography - the underwater one - begins to acquire space within the soul, emphasizing a functional artistic vein to communicate in a different way with the rest of the world.
In love with the Mediterranean Sea and especially with his Calabria and Sicily, he realizes that he also needs words to tell his emotions. Thus he began to write to disseminate, through images and texts, that underwater universe which, very often, is unknown to most.
And so, in 2016, the journalistic relationship with media and magazines began, including prestigious Italian and foreign sector publications.
Study and passion for diving and photography begin to characterize his extra-professional life to become an indissolubly part of it and allow, in 2018, the achievement of the certification enabling deep diving.
Since 2019 he has been constantly writing for Mediterraneo e Dintorni, a monthly on environment and culture, taking care, for more than a year, of his own space dedicated to naturalistic dissemination.
Giovanni Laganà nasce a Reggio Calabria nel 1968 e nel Mar Jonio - a Saline in provincia di Reggio Calabria – fin da giovanissimo vive in simbiosi con il mare ed in particolare con il mondo sommerso.
Già a 14 anni affronta le prime apnee profonde, spesso immotivatamente azzardate.
La prima muta vera, dopo tanto freddo, gli viene regalata da Evelyn, compagna di sempre, per il suo diciannovesimo compleanno.
Negli anni successivi Giovanni comprende tuttavia che i pochi minuti di apnea trascorsi consecutivamente sott’acqua non bastavano più.
E così, nel 1998, a Vulcano consegue il primo brevetto per immersioni in ARA.
E’ laureato in l'Ingegneria ma questo poco importa, è un altro tema, pur importante, della sua vita.
Trascinato da figlie e moglie, dopo parecchi anni trascorsi navigando fra le isole del Mediterraneo, sempre con qualche immersione estiva, riprende il percorso già iniziato e, dal 2013, non riesce mai a stare per un mese intero fuori dall’acqua: costantemente, in qualsiasi stagione.
Diventa istruttore subacqueo professionista e segue i suoi allievi con meticolosità infondendo, ad ogni piè sospinto, consigli e prudenza.
Pian piano però si accorge che la fotografia - quella underwater – comincia ad acquisire spazio dentro l’anima dando enfasi ad una vena artistica funzionale per comunicare in modo diverso con il resto del mondo.
Innamorato del Mar Mediterraneo e soprattutto della sua Calabria e della Sicilia, per raccontare le sue emozioni si accorge di aver bisogno anche delle parole. Inizia così a scrivere per divulgare, mediante immagini e testi, quell’universo sottomarino che, molto spesso, è sconosciuto ai più.
E così, nel 2016, inizia il rapporto giornalistico con media e magazine tra cui si annoverano prestigiose testate di settore italiane ed estere.
Studio e passione per subacquea e fotografia iniziano a caratterizzare la sua vita extra professionale fino a farne parte indissolubilmente e consentire, nel 2018, il conseguimento della certificazione abilitante alle immersioni profonde.
Dal 2019 scrive costantemente per Mediterraneo e Dintorni, mensile di ambiente e cultura, curando, da più di un anno, un proprio spazio dedicato alla divulgazione naturalistica.
