MATTHEW SMITH

“For me one of the most wondrous parts of any dive is the moment that the water engulfs my mask as my head slips below the surface. I think it’s the suspense of the unknown of what lies beneath, the transitional part of moving from one element to the next that feels so magical and the thought of what alien creatures I might encounter. That is what draws me to taking half over half underwater images. I try to convey to the viewer that majestic feeling in a picture format. It’s maybe the best way I can communicate to a non-diver what it’s all about, to marry a wet and unfamiliar world with a dry and more familiar one.

I view my half over half underwater images as a landscape photograph; I prefer brooding and atmospheric skies over a blue sunny midday and a composition that compliments both the above and below elements. I undertake many location scouts with my snorkel gear on. Whilst doing the scouts I will take reference pictures so I can plan how to make my final image when a suitable location has been found. A final image in my portfolio is often a well-researched and planned affair.”

ENZO TROISI

I was born in Salerno, near Amalfi coast, that is my natural training dive place. I started to take underwater photos in 1985 with a nikonos camera, because I felt natural need to live again the beauty of sea landscapes once come back home.
Step to competition became a good chance to compare with others photographers better than me,  learning more and more, especially by relation with great Sorrento school artists like Guido Picchetti, my trainer, Gianfranco D’Amato and Enrico Gargiulo, my great master. I reported very good results, got several prizes and became part of Italian team of underwater photography. 
After some years I was attracted by reportage, since I noticed that articles on magazines were always limited to description of sea bottom, as if it were a monument and not a living marvel. So I tried to describe the “spirit” of mediterranean sea dives, attaching nice shots to written text, and results were very satisfactory. 
I published photos or articles on many magazines like  “Airone”, “Il fotografo”, “Gente Viaggi”,  “Ocean Realm”, “Sub”, “Mondo Sommerso”, “Unterwasser” and  “Tauchen”.  I  am very depressed  in  being aware of progressive disappearance of this kind of revues, especially in Italy.
I’m often invited to be part of juries in many underwater photo competitions, that represents an occasion to improve my talent and enjoying a lot of fantastic shots. Besides  I’m part of  I.U.P.S. - Italian Underwater photographic society - (www.iups.it) where I can go on with my passion and learning by relation with some of the most important underwater photographers.
I love Mediterranean sea, and I guiltily hanged out little other seas.  Recently I published, by now just on line and waiting for an editor, a book not  by chance called “Tropico del Mediterraneo” (Mediterranean tropic) you can leaf through here :  http://it.blurb.com/b/5627625-tropico-del-mediterraneo  . It represents very well my passion, with large written and photo captions.   
Really, because of work and personal situation, I always dive less and less to my desire, but I’m happy to come back from dives with good shots and a smile almost every time… 

Equipment:  actually  I  use a Nikon d800e  camera in Isotecnic housing, that gives to me an assurance in strength and reliability in every situation. 
As lenses I use a Sigma 15 mm. fish-eye, nikon 10mm DX., 20 mm., micro nikkor 60 and 105 mm.. 
My strobes are two subtronic alfa pro and mini, and an  ikelite 200.

Sono nato a Salerno,  vicino la costiera amalfitana, che rappresenta la mia palestra di immersione fotografica. Ho iniziato a scattare foto subacquee nel 1985 con una fotocamera Nikonos, in quanto avvertivo la necessità di rivivere la bellezza dei paesaggi marini una volta tornato a casa.
Il passaggio verso le competizioni rappresentò una ottima opportunità di confronto con altri fotografi più bravi, ma imparai tantissimo, in particolare, dai rapporti avuti con grandi fotografi della scuola sorrentina  come Guido Picchetti, mio istruttore fotografico, Gianfranco D’Amato ed Enrico Gargiulo, mio grande maestro. Ottenni ottimi risultati, vinsi diversi premi e diventai componente del cosiddetto “team azzurro”, la rappresentativa italiana di fotosub. 
Dopo alcuni anni fui attratto dal reportage, dal momento che notavo come gli articoli giornalistici sulle riviste si limitavano alla descrizione dei fondali come se il mare fosse un monumento, e non una meraviglia vivente. Così provai a descrivere lo spirito delle immersioni mediterranee, unendo scatti a testi un po’ diversi dal solito, ed i risultati furono molto lusinghieri.
Ho pubblicato foto o articoli su varie riviste come   “Airone”, “Il fotografo”, “Gente Viaggi”,  “Ocean Realm”, “Sub”, “Mondo Sommerso”, “Unterwasser” e  “Tauchen”. Sono molto triste nel constatare la progressiva scomparsa di questo tipo di pubblicazioni, specialmente in Italia.
Sono frequentemente invitato a far parte di giurie in varie manifestazioni e concorsi fotografici, e ciò rappresenta per me una occasione sia per migliorarmi che godere di tante fantastiche fotografie
Faccio parte della I.U.P.S. - società italiana di fotografia subacquea – (www.iups.it ) dove posso coltivare ad alto livello la mia passione confrontandomi quotidianamente con alcuni dei più bravi fotografi subacquei italiani.
Io amo il Mediterraneo, e colpevolmente ho trascurato gli altri mari. Recentemente ho pubblicato, al momento soltanto on line.  ed in attesa di un eventuale editore, un libro non a caso intitolato “Tropico del Mediterraneo”, che è interamente consultabile sul sito http://it.blurb.com/b/5627625-tropico-del-mediterraneo . Questo libro ben mi rappresenta, con ampie parti scritte e descrizioni molto dettagliate delle immagini.
In effetti, a causa di situazioni di lavoro e personali, mi immergo sempre molto meno di quanto vorrei, ma sono contento di ritornare quasi sempre dalle immersioni con buone foto ed un sorriso… 

Apparecchiature: attualmente uso una fotocamera Nikon D800e  in custodia Isotecnic, che mi offre robustezza ed affidabilità in ogni situazione.
Utilizzo ottiche Sigma 15mm fish-eye, 10 mm. Nikon DX, 20mm Nikon, 60 e 105mm.  micro nikkor.
I miei flash sono due Subtronic, l’alfa pro ed il mini, ed un Substrobe Ikelite 200.
